The conventional military history loses interest in the soldier the moment he is wounded. Thereafter he becomes no more than a statistic of that particular battle. Histories of military medicine take up the soldier's tale from the moment he occupies a hospital bed, but how he got from Mons to Millbank is left to the imagination of the reader. It is this void which Colonel Plumridge seeks to fill. He explains the peculiar problems created by the transportation of wounded on land and on sea and follows the stages by which these problems were gradually overcome. He traces the history of the various hospital hips and ambulance trains which served the British armed forces so faithfully until rendered obsolete by CASEVAC. Apart from filling a significant gap in British military history, Colonel Plumridge's book is a moving and worthy tribute to a vital if sometimes neglected aspect of warfare in the first half of this century, the more so because the author writes with the benefit of many years of service devoted to the rapid and efficient transportation of the wounded
