Résumé ou extrait
- Considering the hydrocarbon ressources of the Arctic regions and the determinations of Canada and the United States to attain energy self-sufficiency as quickly as possible, international navigation is bound to take place in the northwest passage . Indeed, it appears that the only questions remaining are: when will such navigation begin and how much will there be.The future use of the Northwest Passage raises a number of legal issues relating to the marine environment, the inuit and the Passage itself. The present study addresses those issues and includes: 1 - a description of the northwest Passage; 2 - a summary of its historical development; 3 - a projection of its future commercial development; 4 - an analysis of the legel status of the Northwest Passage, both present and future; and 5 - a discussion of the main policy implications of the future use of the Passage. The map, diagrams and tables accompanying the text should greatly facilitate its understanding. Although the book is intended primarly for international lawyers, diplomats and government officials, it should also prove useful to historians, geographer and all those with an interest in the Arctic regions and their future development.
