  • "Adversary and Ally provides a comparative historical analysis of China's impact within northeastern India and Pakistan's Balochistan Province, strategic peripheries that have been at the center of the Indian and Pakistani relationships with China and which continue to present some of the most pressing security and development challenges in both countries. China's influence, as both an adversary and an ally, created conditions and incentives for the Indian and Pakistani governments to increase state penetration within the periphery, which exacerbated conditions contributing to the outbreak of anti-state violence. By connecting international politics with domestic security, Adversary and Ally demonstrates the influence that India and Pakistan's engagement with China has on shaping the two governments' perspectives of and policies toward both their strategic frontiers."
