Résumé ou extrait
- "The United States strategic community is in the midst of a debate between the advocates of a coalition defense versus a maritime strategy. The catalyst for this debate is the perceived inability of former strategic concepts to address the changing needs of the United States. This thesis presents a critical analysis of this debate using traditional strategic studies and geographic approaches. Additionally, a new scientific approach to geopolitical analysis is presented as a means to relate strategic ideas and geographic areas."
- "The traditional strategic studies approach to critical analysis focuses upon ideas. The debate literature is critically analyzed in the topics of threat perceptions, foreign policy, strategic theory, and U.S. Navy policy. A shortcoming of this approach is its lack of explicit areal content."
- "Geographic approaches can be used to analyze the areal context of the strategic ideas. However, comparative cartography techniques and classical geopolitical analysis are shown to be limited in usefulness."
- "An alternate approach to geopolitical analysis is proposed as a means to rigorously introduce the areal context into strategic analysis. This approach involves the use of scientific methods to produce relevant theoretical generalizations relating strategic ideas and geographic areas."
