• The traditionally glacial pace of change in the Gulf Monarchies accelerates and old certainties for leaders in Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, Oman, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE have disappeared. Decades of easy money facilitated by a robust oil price have come to an end, young leaders have taken over, the monarchies have been waging war like never before in Yemen, and international political alignments have shifted. At home, women will soon drive cars in Saudi Arabia, and societies struggle with issues including unemployment, youth bulges, and sectarian tensions. Revolutionary Evolution in the Gulf Monarchies outlines and examines these issues and concerns, providing a comprehensive understanding of security and change for the Gulf in the contemporary environment. The book initially explores challenges to the status quo as they impact the political, economic, military, societal, and environmental spheres of the six monarchies. Subsequently, the text draws informed conclusions on whether these changes are as profound as they may appear, and it considers what the implications of such domestic, regional, and international turbulence entail for the stability of these states.
