  • A new Arctic emerges The Arctic Five priorities, policies, & programs Other key stakeholders in the future of the Arctic Summary conclusions and recommendations
  • Présentation de l'éditeur : "As the polar ice cap continues to melt, giving way to new and ever larger waterways in the Arctic, the world is witnessing nothing less than the opening of a new ocean, something that has not occurred on Earth since the end of the Ice Age...In the view of numerous maritime experts [this new ocean could] substantially reduce travel distances, transit times, and overall transportation costs...Even before then is the prospective extraction of significant strategic mineral supplies from the northernmost territories, especially those offshore in the Arctic seabed of Norway, Russia, Denmark, Canada, and the United States, commonly referred to as the Arctic Five...At the same time, whatever the level of regional tension is at any particular time, the Arctic, situated atop three continents, has been and will continue to be, in geostrategic terms, an extremely valuable piece of real estate....The analysis that follows aims to paint a comprehensive picture of the new strategic map just now emerging in the Arctic, to examine what that portends with regard to the potential for conflict or cooperation within the region, and, on that basis, to determine as clearly as possible the likely policies and priorities of the Arctic Five and other key regional stakeholders, and the skills and capabilities to operate in the Arctic that they will require as a result."
