  • Beginning with a detailed historical description of the aircraft carrier, the development of carrier-air tactics, the training of carrier pilots, and the numerous operational considerations that impacted carrier-based aerial combat, Carrier clash takes the reader into the air with intrepid U.S. Navy fighter pilots as they defend their ships and the Guadalcanal invasion fleet against determined Japanese attacks of August 7 and 8, 1942. After the stage has been set for the August 24 battle, the reader takes off again, this time in the cockpits of U.S. Navy Dauntless dive-bombers as they attack the Japanese light aircraft carrier Ryujo, which is hit with their 500-pound bombs. Meanwhile, Wildcat fighter pilots valorously defend the American aircraft carriers against a determined onslaught of Japanese Val dive-bombers. Hammel's account of bomb hits on the USS Enterprise and the heroic firefighting and rescue efforts of her crew is especially compelling. Carrier clash is based upon both American and Japanese battle reports as well as recollections of many airmen and seamen who took part.
