  • Push NATO eastward or push no farther--that is the critical question for the fifty-year-old alliance. This anthology examines four issues: the enlargement of NATO before the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, probable guidelines and possible paths to future enlargement, the views of certain states currently seeking memberships, and the objections to the enlargement posed by several states of the former Soviet Union. Three concluding essays consider the political and military dimension of the enlargement issue
