  • In this volume, NHHC historians capture the U.S. Navy’s damage control efforts from 1937 to 2000, as well as two Royal Navy examples from 1982. This publication tells the stories of sailors who faced fear, chaos, and uncertainty and overcame them through skill, courage, and teamwork. Detailed within six chapters are a variety of instructive scenarios, including responses to unexpected air attack, incessant waves of kamikaze strikes, horrific fires on aircraft carriers, missile attacks, mine strikes, and terrorist bombings. Collectively, the accounts demonstrate just how far inspired leadership, intensive training, proper equipment, and personal courage can go toward saving a ship.
